On Sept. 30, 1911 the Bayless Pulp and Paper Company Dam in Austin broke. This concrete dam, built in 1909 was nearly fifty feet high and 534 feet long. It's failure sent torrents of water and debris down Freeman Run into Austin and Costello, causing great destruction and killing at least 78 people. The Austin Dam disaster inspired legislation in 1913 to regulate the construction of dams in Pennsylvania.

Austin is a borough located in Potter County, Pennsylvania. As of the last census, the Austin Borough had a total population of 623. Over 3,000 people lived in the Austin Costello area when it was recognized as the "Lumber City" before the bursting of the dam in 1911. Few towns experienced more growing pains or downright bad luck than Austin. Today with it's beautiful scenery, Austin's many businesses and services have made it a wonderful place to live and raise a family.

Coudersport is a borough located in Potter County, Pennsylvania. As of the last census, the total population of Coudersport was 2,650. It is the county seat of Potter County. When first surveyed in 1807 there were no residents. It was not until the Coudersport and Port Allegany Railroad was constructed in 1882 that the town grew to around 3,000 people. In 1880, a fire destroyed all of the business section of Coudersport. Measures were taken to replace the destroyed wooden buildings by those of brick, many of which still stand today and give Coudersport it's Victorian charm.
