As of the last census, the total population of Coudersport was 2,650. It is the county seat of Potter County. When first surveyed in 1807 there were no residents. It was not until the Coudersport and Port Allegany Railroad was constructed in 1882 that the town grew to around 3,000 people. In 1880, a fire destroyed all of the business section of Coudersport. This concrete dam, built in 1909 was nearly fifty feet high and 534 feet long. It's failure sent torrents of water and debris down Freeman Run into Austin and Costello, causing great destruction and killing at least 78 people.
